Deviated Septum

The nasal septum may be the wall that divides the nasal cavities in half, along with a deviated septum occurs when the septum is severely shifted from the midline. The perfect situation is perfect for the nasal septum to divide the cavities equally therefore the passageways are identical size. Approximately 80% of septums are off-center to some extent, but it is only when they are severely offside that problems occur.

deviated septum

The most common symptom of a deviated septum is breathlessness through the nose. Other symptoms may include nosebleeds, facial pain, headaches, postnasal drip, and heavy snoring and breathing while sleeping.

The causes of a deviated septum are few. The first is the condition presenting itself at birth. There may be trauma at birth that causes a personal injury to nose in the birth canal or even the deviation can happen during fetal development. The second cause is injury to the nose. This will happen in any way you can imagine, from the bump, to some sports injury, or car accident. And the third is really a deterioration from the cartilage through normal aging.

When the deviated septum is just mildly deviated symptoms may present themselves once the patient has a cold. Top of the respiratory tract infection triggers nasal swelling and amplifies what is normally a very small condition in to a temporarily larger one. When the cold is over, the symptoms retreat.

septum

When the deviated septum causes a significant disruption in breathing, recurrent sinus infections or frequent nosebleeds, surgery might be recommended or required. The preferred surgery to correct a deviated septum is known as septoplasty.

Septoplasty is really a surgery performed with the nostrils and because of this no bruising or other external signs are visible. The surgery itself typically takes face to face . 5 hours to correct the nasal septum, but if the surgery is coupled with rhinoplasty or sinus surgery, it will take longer.

After surgery symptoms such as nosebleeds and obstructed breathing will be completely resolved. But underlying issues such as nasal or sinus conditions will have to be cured or controlled in another manner.

septoplasty

Certain symptoms of a deviated septum, such as nasal congestion or drip, might be relieved through over the counter drugs such as nasal decongestants, antihistamines, and nasal sprays. They are simply a temporary fix, and won’t cure the issue, only relieve the symptoms for a small amount of time.
